What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence (DV) is a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control. Partners may be married or not married; heterosexual, homosexual, or lesbian; living together, separated or dating. Domestic Violence is not about anger; it is all about power and control.  Domestic violence encompasses more than physical abuse. Other forms of domestic violence include emotional, verbal, financial, mental, sexual and narcissistic abuses.

If you are being bullied, terrorized, criticized, manipulated, isolated, humiliated, and/or intimidated aggressively, these, too, are signs of domestic violence that often and most times lead to the most aggressive form of abuse, physical. Sadly, this could very well lead to death.

One out of four women around the world has been beaten or otherwise abused during her lifetime.  Every nine seconds a woman is abused.  One out of fourteen men around the world has been beaten and abused during his lifetime. Yes! Men are victims, too. Most times victims of domestic violence are silent about it and many are living in fear.  The biggest reason most victims keep quiet about domestic violence is the fear of being judged, not taken seriously, and/or ridiculed by friends as well as family.
